What MCP is and what it lets AI do
SnipTray speaks the Model Context Protocol, so an AI assistant can work with your snips from a chat.
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that lets AI assistants use outside tools. SnipTray ships an MCP server, so once you connect an assistant it can reach into your clipboard history — search it, read a snip, put one back on your clipboard to paste, and save a new snippet — all from inside a conversation.
What an approved assistant can do
- Search your history — "find the staging database URL I copied yesterday" searches every snip by text, title, or category.
- Read a snip into the chat — pull a snip’s full content in so the assistant can quote, transform, or reason over it.
- Copy back to paste — place any snip on your clipboard, ready to paste wherever you need it.
- Save a new snippet — capture the assistant’s output straight into your SnipTray history.
What it cannot do
Access is read-only for your history. An assistant can search, read, copy a snip back, and add a new snippet — but it cannot delete or edit existing snips, and it cannot touch your categories, pinboards, or team sharing.
Note
MCP is a Mac feature and needs SnipTray for Mac running. It is off until you turn it on, and every assistant must be added by you before it can connect. See Turn on MCP and add an assistant.
